A Description of Merry

Merry has been designed as a one-off boat, building on the experience of a number of keen boaters, including her owners who use her regularly.

Once on board, you will enjoy the personal touches and style, all of which set her apart from other hire boats.  One hirer said: “She is a delightful boat with a great character.”

The interior is very light with ash panelling, brass fittings and halogen lights. We have included features to enhance the experience for boaters, such as a stained-glass window for privacy; creative ways to store all your stuff; room to sit on deck when it's sunny; radiators and drying space when it is not!

The layout reflects our experience of narrowboats:

  • a stern galley making it easy to take tea (or beers!) to the person steering at the helm

  • a bow bedroom that is great for breakfast in bed as the sun streams through the doors, or to sit in comfort, watching out as you cruise along

  • a modern shower room that is effectively en suite for both bedrooms

  • a cruiser stern with space for four people to sit and chat as well as steer, and room on the bow deck for a different view

  • and a low-wash hull design that helps to protect the banks and wildlife.

Merry is ideal for one or two couples, but can also accommodate a family – whether young or old. With a continuous handrail and cruiser stern with rails, the boat is generally safer for children and less-able people to get on and off. A custom-built playpen also helps to contain a toddler safely. Although designed as two doubles, hirers have successfully used the Dinette bed for two young children (under 4’ tall) in their own sleeping bags.

It is easy to pick up the basic art of narrowboating.  At only 40-feet long, Merry is much easier to manoeuvre than most hire boats. When you arrive at New Mills Marina in Derbyshire, staff will explain everything you need to know about the boat and safety on board (which is also included in a handy manual).  All you need to do is to relax and enjoy the countryside and camaraderie of a narrowboat holiday. Go at your own pace – stopping at pubs when you choose and mooring where you chose.

Holiday Options

  • Traditional week-long holidays that give you a chance to unwind.

  • Short breaks of Monday-Friday or Friday-Monday if you want to try out narrowboating or perhaps for a romantic celebration.

  • Longer bookings for more challenging adventures or more time to explore local towns and cities.

  • Day hire – a rare opportunity to spend a day on a proper narrowboat and to see why boating is so enjoyable.

Happy Hirers

Feedback from hirers suggests that we have got it right! They find Merry compact and easy to use. They particularly like the extra sink and shaving mirror in the bedroom, warm towel rail in the shower room, and lots of storage space to keep things ship-shape.

“Merry is a welcoming boat, packed with personal touches that make her a pleasure to use”.
